Difference between online and traditional education, comparison and summary

Traditional schooling experience requires that you’re physically present in the campus. Especially for students who wish to experience the campus life or decide to experience living in dorms, there’s definitely a great deal of opportunity for growth not just academically, but also emotionally, psychologically, and socially.

By attending classes held in campuses, you’re afforded a rich learning experience from your classmates, your professors, guidance counselors, and peers. In addition, there are certain fields of study that require your presence in the campus. Most of those disciplines involve the use of specialized facilities that cater to specialized skills such as engineering, nursing and other tech degrees.

Put simply, it can be said that some people are better suited for traditional classes. Then there are those who are not.

Contemporary education that utilizes the internet through online classes are a different story altogether. Also dubbed as “distance learning”, online education presents itself with vast opportunities that are more flexible and highly convenient to some learners, although it may come with some degree of limitations.

But all these limitations can easily be outweighed by the number of significant advantages one can get from utilizing online classes.

Online education works best for individuals who have familial responsibilities or who simply have too much on their plate. For working people, the lack of a flexible schedule hinders their chances of pursuing their education in the traditional education setting, so online education becomes a more viable option. Online education also works best for people who travel a lot—either for work or leisure.

The basic requirements of course include having a reliable computer and internet connection.

One of the greatest advantages of online education is affordability. Traditional education compels you to pay skyrocketing amount of fees that may not work well with you, especially if you’re financially constrained. Online courses come at a much cheaper price, sometimes even for free.

Another important feature of online education is its mobility. You can basically have classes anywhere you want. While some students are socially wired and feel comfortable learning in a classroom, others are not. Environmental factors can either help or dampen the learning process, and some people can also feel an overwhelming sense of anxiety when put in a populated situation. So learning from the comfort of their homes offers them a more relaxing environment and a chance to learn at their own pace.

While detractors of online education emphasize the importance of social interactions that only traditional education settings provide, it’s safe to contend that the conditions of online learning shouldn’t necessarily be solitary. Especially with the advent of social apps and video chats and conferencing like Skype, interactions are still highly possible.

Now that online education is gaining popularity from the public, more and more people are switching to online classes as a way to circumvent some valid limitations that traditional education setting presents.
